More than one-third of American adults today are obese, moreover, the prevalence of obesity among American kids has tripled from 1971 to 2011. These figures are incredibly troubling, so much so that obesity has become a bigger cause of concern among children, bigger than even drug abuse and smoking.

While that ring of fat around your waist might not seem that problematic now, chances are it can morph into a very big problem if you are not aware enough. Belly fat, before you know it, can infiltrate your internal organs and cause a bunch of problems. This pernicious flab is linked to everything from diabetes to heart disease to liver failure.

But, there are ways you can burn the belly fat by a few simple tweaks in your diet. Here are some food items that can help you blow the belly fat away:

Oat Bran

If you are a fan of oatmeal, oat bran is definitely right up your alley. For every cup, this amazing breakfast packs 18 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein, and pretty much the same amount of calories as oatmeal. Made from the outer husks of oats, this is truly a breakfast of the champions. It is filling and supremely healthy. You just have to add milk and cinnamon to it to make this meal even more delicious.

Green Tea

While a lot has been made about green tea’s propensity to reduce belly flab, it is information that is looked upon with suspicion. Well, not anymore, the Journal of Nutrition reports that those who drink green tea, coupling it with 180 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, every week lose 7.4% more fat than those that don’t drink tea. The catechin and antioxidant heavy green tea increase metabolism and the rate at which the liver burns fat. But try and get in at least six to seven cuppas of the same to feel the effects.

Black Rice

One of the most abundant sources of antioxidants in the food world, black rice has a number of traits that make it ideal for burning belly fat. For starters, the American Chemical Society has found black rice to have more antioxidants than a spoonful of blueberries and more fiber, more vitamin E, and less sugar. The high dosage of antioxidants ensures that there is considerably less fat storage and inflammation in your body.

Black Beans

These magic beans are high in fiber, low in fat, and an amazing resource of resistant starch. The magic of these beans lies in the resistant starch they contain. They feed the healthy bacteria in your stomach and help in the synthesis of the chemical butyrate which encourages the body to burn fat as fuel. The darker the bean, the higher the concentration of phytochemicals they possess, and the better their fat burning abilities.

Pumpkin Seeds

These innocuous seeds have one of the highest concentrations of protein in the food kingdom. One ounce of pumpkin seeds has eight grams of protein, much more than eggs or almonds. It is also rich in zinc, fiber, and potassium. These elements are the key to a flat belly, help facilitate muscle building and recovery. Eat them as a part of your salads, or munch on them when afternoon hunger pangs strike. These little seeds could be the trick to trimming that waistline.
